This was not just a history of the few acres underneath the old train shack. The Reading Terminal Market represents the culmination of Philadelphia’s early market era, a relic of a time when the city throbbed with the full range of human salesmanship.
Situated at first on High Street, named such for the pavers lining the middle to create a surface for travel and commerce, the Philadelphia markets would spread towards the west and south, at times a public nuisance, at others a central gathering point.
Food grounds us & it brings us together, and there’s no place that’s more true than the Reading Terminal Market. If you live in Philly, read this book!
