Good novels can be so invigorating – feelings, ideas, constructs. Super Sad True Love Story delivers on the form, the third novel from Gary Shteyngart. A romantic epic set against the backdrop of America’s romanesque collapse, SSTLS introduces us to “Lenny”, a hopeless romantic & out-of-date humanist working for a dystopian megacorp that specializes in private militaries and lifespan extension.
Lenny falls for the restrained Eunice, a young second-generation Korean still very much finding herself. The sci fi elements sprinkled through the book were fascinating and mind-expanding, but I found myself captivated most by the diary-style passages by Eunice (the whole book is written first-person in form of diary entries and letters from the characters).
Shteyngart channeled a mix of youth, newness, online lingo, and value shifting that felt authentic to the imagined future. All said, an enjoyable & easy ready. Pick it up!
